BBC Breakfast announced that a 'major incident' had been declared in Conwy, Wales, on Monday as firefighters battled wildfires across the UK. Hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay reported that emergency services dealt with several fires overnight in North Wales.
Wildfire on Conwy Mountain Forces Evacuations
Jon Kay, 56, stated: 'Firefighters have been dealing with several fires overnight across North Wales. A major incident was declared after a wildfire on Conwy Mountain and dozens of people evacuated from a nearby village. Neighbouring communities have been urged to close their windows and doors and to avoid affected areas.'
The broadcast then spoke to locals who had been evacuated. One guest said: 'Our dogs started barking madly at about quarter to six this morning and I could smell burning, so I leapt out of bed and realised that obviously something was going on, but the whole area now up there is an evacuation zone and we don't know when we're going home.'
Fire Spreads Rapidly Due to Weather Conditions
BBC Breakfast reported that the fire quickly took hold on land scorched by recent hot weather, with flames fanned by 30 mile per hour winds, forcing the evacuation of dozens of homes. Another guest recounted: 'Around six o'clock in the morning, we had a knock at the door and I'm like, "Who's at the door at six o'clock in the morning?" And there was a police officer and I looked outside and I'd just seen the smoke and I thought, "Alright, yeah." He said, "close all your windows because obviously we've got a bit of a situation."'
A different guest added: 'Two hours later, there was another knock on the door saying, "Pack a bag, you may have to just leave." And that to me hit home then because it's, "Well, how serious is this? What do I put in my bag?"'
Sally Nugent Comments on the Challenging Situation
Back in the studio, host Sally Nugent, 54, commented: 'Really challenging time for people living around there at the moment' as the show displayed a clear satellite image showing the scale of the fire. BBC Breakfast continues at 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
