A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pregnant woman was stabbed in what police describe as a targeted attack in the village of Aberfan, south Wales.
The victim, aged 29, was taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds. She is conscious and her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Witnesses said she was 37 weeks pregnant and expressed concern for her baby.
Armed officers conducted a search of the area, leading to the arrest of a man from Merthyr in the nearby village of Troedyrhiw. Local schools and a childcare centre were placed in lockdown as a precaution during the operation.
Chief Inspector Rob Miles said the attack occurred in broad daylight and is believed to be targeted. He thanked the community for their support and confirmed an increased police presence in the coming days.
The stabbing took place on Moy Road, close to the site of the 1966 Aberfan disaster. Residents described the scene as reminiscent of that tragedy, with forensic teams in white suits and an air ambulance landing nearby. The woman was taken by road ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff after receiving advanced critical care at the scene.
