An explosion rocked Monaco on Monday evening, injuring three members of a Ukrainian family as they walked out of a building. The victims, a couple and their 13-year-old son, were caught in a blast caused by a booby-trapped backpack, according to local authorities.
Victims in Critical Condition
The two adults are in critical condition at a Monaco hospital, while the boy sustained less severe injuries. The explosion occurred around 10pm near the entrance of the Cuomo Foundation, a self-described philanthropic organization, destroying the building's entrance.
CCTV Evidence and Suspect
CCTV footage allegedly shows a suspect dropping off bags shortly before the blast. Police reported that the victims were Ukrainian, and the suspect was seen fleeing towards the border with the nearby French town of Beausoleil.
Officials Call It an Attack
Although the incident has not been officially declared a terrorist act, the Mayor of Nice, Eric Ciotti, labeled it an attack on social media. He wrote on X: 'The attack carried out this evening is a tragedy that has hit Monaco. Thoughts for the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Total support for the security forces and emergency services mobilised.'
Minister of State Christophe Mirmand later stated, 'This is likely an attack.' He added that the explosive device likely contained bolts and shot, and that police are gathering evidence. Mirmand also noted, 'This is the first time in history, to my knowledge, that such an act has occurred in the Principality.'
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are continuing their investigation, with police collecting evidence at the scene. The suspect remains at large, and a manhunt is underway in the region.
