An explosion rocked the central Athens neighbourhood of Plaka this morning, prompting a major emergency response as firefighters swarmed the area.
Two women were rescued as crews worked at the scene, which is popular with tourists.
Firefighters respond to blast
The blast struck one of the Greek capital's central districts, with images shared on social media showing a heavy presence of fire crews and emergency vehicles in the area.
A post on X, formerly Twitter, from user @Niorigiris, accompanied by a photograph, said: "Έκρηξη βόμβας στη Πλάκα" — Greek for "Bomb explosion in Plaka".
Rescue operation under way
Firefighters were seen surrounding the affected location, with the rescue of the two women confirmed amid the operation.
