An armed bystander opened fire on a gunman outside an In-N-Out restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, after the attacker had killed two people and wounded seven. Police believe the gunman then killed himself.
Video posted online shows the local man with a handgun exchanging shots with the shooter outside the crowded burger chain as others called emergency services. The footage quickly spread on social media.
Gunman believed dead by own hand
Officers who arrived at the scene confirmed two people had been killed and seven were wounded. According to police, the gunman is believed to have taken his own life. Witnesses said the armed citizen "undoubtedly" saved lives by distracting the attacker long enough for diners and workers to escape.
Witness tells of seeing the attack
Lane Koehn, 34, said he was stopped at a red light near the In-N-Out when he saw a man carrying an AR-style rifle come out of the drive-thru. A second man, the good samaritan, began firing at the gunman with a pistol.
Koehn said he then saw a woman in an In-N-Out uniform bleeding from her chest being dragged across the parking lot by another employee. He said he did not know whether she survived, but he tried to help.
Koehn, the armed citizen and the employee stayed with the wounded worker until paramedics arrived. "She was pretty bad off, but I don’t know. I hope she made it," he told local news outlet KPTV.
Investigation ongoing
Police have not yet released the gunman's identity or a possible motive. An investigation is underway.
