Funeral details for former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe are being finalized as Buckfast Abbey works closely with her family following her death on July 8.
Widdecombe died after being struck 21 times on the head with a hammer, according to evidence heard at Westminster Magistrates’ Court last week. A provisional cause of death was given as a “blunt force injury to the head.”
Charges and Court Proceedings
Joshua Kerry of Rotherham was arrested on suspicion of murder on July 11. He was later further arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, but has not been charged with that offence. A provisional trial date has been set for June 8, 2027.
Widdecombe's family has continued funeral preparations, liaising with Buckfast Abbey, the place of worship where she was a regular. Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community of Buckfast have released a statement confirming they "continue to hold Ann Widdecombe, her family and loved ones in our prayers during this difficult time."
Statement from Buckfast Abbey
After her death, Buckfast Abbey, located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, released a statement saying Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community were "deeply saddened to hear of the death of Ann Widdecombe in such tragic and disturbing circumstances." Ann regularly attended services at the Abbey Church, including Sunday Solemn Mass and Holy Week and Easter services. The statement continued: "Many in our worshipping community knew her as a kind and warm character. She will be missed and fondly remembered."
The statement also said: "Ann was a woman of profound faith, a faith which found expression in the public forum of politics. Ann was unafraid to express her unwavering convictions, formed through her Roman Catholic faith. She had a sharp intellect and was a dedicated public servant. Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community extend their heartfelt condolences to her family and friends."
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 26, Fr Abbot confirmed the church was liaising "closely with the family regarding funeral arrangements" and would share further details "in due course, when appropriate." The community expressed gratitude for "the many messages of sympathy and support that have been received."
Buckfast Abbey is home to a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine monks who live according to the ancient Rule of St. Benedict. The site has historical significance, as the original abbey was founded in 1018 AD by King Cnut.
