Funeral arrangements for former MP Ann Widdecombe are still being finalised, her local church has announced. Buckfast Abbey confirmed it is working closely with the family after her death in allegedly being struck 21 times on the head with a hammer.
Cause of Death and Arrest
A preliminary cause of death was cited as a 'blunt force injury to the head', according to court proceedings. Joshua Kerry from Rotherham was arrested on suspicion of murder and subsequently further arrested under suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, although he has not been charged with this offence.
Church Statement
Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community of Buckfast issued a statement confirming they 'continue to hold Ann Widdecombe, her family and loved ones in our prayers during this difficult time'. Following her death, the abbey expressed being 'deeply saddened to hear of the death of Ann Widdecombe in such tragic and disturbing circumstances'.
Ann was a regular at services held at the Abbey Church, including Sunday Solemn Mass and Holy Week and Easter services. The statement added: 'Many in our worshipping community knew her as a kind and warm character. She will be missed and fondly remembered.'
Funeral Plans
In a statement released on Sunday, 26th July, Fr Abbot confirmed the church was working 'closely with the family regarding funeral arrangements' and would provide additional details 'in due course, when appropriate'. Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community revealed they were 'grateful for the many messages of sympathy and support that have been received.'
Buckfast Abbey houses a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine monks who follow the ancient Rule of St. Benedict. The location holds considerable historical significance, as the original abbey was established in 1018 AD by King Cnut.
