An air ambulance has been scrambled to a two-vehicle crash on the A915 near Cairnsmill Caravan Park south of St Andrews in Fife. The alarm was raised shortly before 10.30am on Sunday, October 11, when officers were alerted to the smash, described as "nasty" by locals.
Emergency response and road closure
Emergency services, including Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service, rushed to the crash site. Flight data shows the air ambulance flew directly from the scene to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. Photos taken on site show the air ambulance having landed in a crop field while a marked police vehicle is parked up nearby.
The number of people involved in the crash, as well as any injuries or hospitalisations, is not yet known. Officers have shut down the busy road while crews secure the scene, with drivers urged to avoid the area.
Witness accounts and official statement
Locals who witnessed emergency services attend the incident took to social media. One wrote: "Three ambulances came from Dundee." Another said: "We were kayaking on the Tay and watched the air ambulance land." A third commented: "Hopefully nobody is seriously hurt." Another penned: "Air ambulance just left," while a last added: "Just about to land at Ninewells."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The A915 is closed at Cairnmills caravan park south of St Andrews following a two-vehicle crash around 10.20am on Sunday, 11 October. Road users are advised to avoid the area."
Weekend of fatal crashes on A9
The incident comes amid a weekend of fatal crashes on the A9. An elderly man died following a crash on the road at Tarlogie near Tain in the Highlands at around 5.15pm on Saturday, October 10. The smash involved a white Peugeot 208 and a white Renault Master Luton van. The 86-year-old man driving the Peugeot was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van, a 41-year-old man, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The road was closed for crash investigation work and re-opened around 3.25am on Sunday.
On Friday, another man died following a four-vehicle smash on the same road south of Cromarty Bridge, near Dingwall, shortly after 8am. The crash involved a blue Dacia Sandero, a white Iveco lorry, a blue Volkswagen Scirocco and a red BMW X6. The male driver of the Dacia was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other men – the drivers of the lorry and the Scirocco – were rushed to Raigmore Hospital for treatment. The road was closed for enquiries and re-opened around 9.20pm. Officers are appealing for information on both incidents.
