Aberdeen FC will remember murdered taxi driver George Murdoch on the 43rd anniversary of his death. The club will run a feature on the case in the Red Matchday programme for their game against St Johnstone on Sunday, October 11.
George Murdoch was found dead beside his cab on Pitfodels Station Road, Aberdeen, in September 1983, having just picked up a fare. The cheesewire believed to have been used to garrotte him was found nearby, but the culprit was never found.
Family seeks fresh paths to justice
George's family continue to seek justice and have announced they are 'focusing on finding fresh paths' that will allow Police Scotland to close the case. George's nephew Alex McKay, 69, helps to run a Facebook page gathering tips and clues into the cold case.
The programme will look back at the events on the day George was murdered and the devastating toll it took on his late wife, Jessie, who passed away without seeing justice. It will also include an update on Police Scotland's ongoing hunt for the killer and the £50,000 reward available for information that leads to the killer being found.
Appeal for information
The family Facebook page also featured an appeal for information on George's murder. It reads: "Please help us spread the word. If you know anything, or have always held strong suspicions as to who the culprit may be, whether dead or alive, please share with us or the police.
"One piece of crucial information might finally lead to that £50K reward being paid out, the closure of this heart-breaking case and most importantly of all, allow George to rest in peace for all eternity."
George, known as Dod, picked up a fare outside the New Marcliffe Hotel in Aberdeen's west end just after 8.30pm on September 29, 1983. He radioed his control room to inform them he was heading to Culter, and after turning off onto Pitfodels Station Road about two miles into the journey, was attacked and killed.
Two cyclists saw him being assaulted and alerted police, but Mr Murdoch was dead by the time officers arrived and his wallet and cash were stolen. Forensic scientists previously managed to develop a male DNA profile from crime scene material thanks to advances in analysis techniques, but detectives need to find a match.
