Two cars erupted into a huge fireball along the A9 near Loch Moy, just south of Inverness, forcing the busy road to close in both directions. The collision happened at around 2pm on Saturday, September 26, near a section of the A9 currently being upgraded as part of the Dualling Programme.
Emergency response and road closure
Police say two vehicles erupted into a fire following the crash. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed three appliances remain at the scene. Although the blaze has been extinguished, emergency crews remain at the scene and recovery of the vehicles is being arranged.
The fire sent thick plumes of smoke into the air. Police Scotland say the A9 between Moy and Tomatin remains closed in both directions, and a three-mile diversion is in place via the B9154. However, it is not suitable for vehicles exceeding 14ft due to a low bridge on the route.
Public urged to avoid the area
The force is urging members of the public to avoid the area at this time. A police spokesperson said: “The A9 between Moy and Tomatin is closed in both directions following a two vehicle crash which was reported around 2pm on Saturday September 26.
“Two vehicles caught fire following the collision and the fire has since been extinguished.
“A diversion is in place however members of the public are asked to avoid the area at this time”.
