Five adults and an unborn child were killed in a targeted shooting at a home in Indianapolis early Sunday, police said. The victims were identified as Kezzie Childs, 42, Raymond Childs, 42, Elijah Childs, 18, Rita Childs, 13, Kiara Hawkins, 19, and her unborn child. A juvenile male was also found with gunshot wounds and is expected to survive.
Police were called around 4am to reports of a person shot on the city's north-east side, leading them to the home where the bodies were discovered. Sergeant Shane Foley said Hawkins was taken to hospital but died despite life-saving efforts.
Chief Randal Taylor described the killings as 'mass murder' and 'a different kind of evil', noting they were not random but targeted. He said it was the largest mass-casualty shooting in the city in over a decade.
Mayor Joe Hogsett called the incident 'mass murder' and said an individual or individuals had brought 'terror to our community'. He has requested assistance from the FBI, US attorneys, and other law enforcement agencies, vowing that 'the full might of local, state and federal law enforcement are coming for them'.
