The tremor, which occurred at 7:34 am local time (1:34 pm BST), had its epicentre in San Jose del Palmar, according to the Colombian geological service.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 115 kilometers, with several parts of the country affected, including Medellín, the capital of the Antioquia province. Witnesses reported feeling the tremor as far away as the border with Venezuela, about 300 miles from the epicentre.
The municipalities closest to the epicentre are San José del Palmar, Río Iró, and Nóvita, located between Cali and Medellin. The Colombian Geological Survey initially recorded the earthquake's magnitude as 6.6, but later revised it to 7.4.
