A blue sedan ploughed into festival-goers in Zacatlán, Mexico, on Wednesday, August 12, injuring 15 people. The driver was detained, and officials said a medical issue may have been a factor.
Video shows moment of impact
Video footage documented the horrifying moment the vehicle struck pedestrians at speed. The clip shows people strolling through a walkway when the car rammed into them, capturing panicked shrieks as people fled. The vehicle came to a halt after smashing into what appears to be a concrete pillar.
The car, a Chevrolet, burst through from the vicinity of Hotel Zacatlán before crashing beside the Apple Pavilion. Multiple attendees at the Gran Feria de la Manzana (Great Apple Fair) sustained injuries, according to local media reports.
Officials confirm no deaths
Zacatlán City Council confirmed there were no deaths. Mayor Bety Sánchez posted on X: "It is important to clarify that, unfortunately, 15 people were injured in this incident; they are stable and out of danger. I also want to clarify that there are no deceased individuals."
In an earlier post, Mayor Sánchez wrote: "We immediately activated the emergency response protocols." She added that the vehicle is in custody and the driver has been detained.
Driver detained, medical issue suspected
"He appears to have some health issue that may have been the cause that triggered this incident, but acting responsibly and in accordance with regulations, we need the necessary expert examinations to be conducted to confirm or rule out this version," the mayor said.
Red Cross medics and emergency responders are on the scene.
