11-year-old girl gang-raped and murdered in India

The brutal gang rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in India has sparked mass protests and a political row. The child was killed on July 5, 2026, after she left her home in Surjyapur village, Baruipur, on the outskirts of Kolkata, to buy a birthday present for a friend. Her body was recovered from a pond the following day.

Police response under scrutiny

The family reported the girl missing around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, but police allegedly delayed action, telling relatives they would search the next day. Frustrated, the family conducted their own investigation and found CCTV footage showing the girl walking with a man identified as Prabhash Mondal. Villagers took Mondal to the police station, and he led officers to the pond where the girl’s body was found wrapped in a sack.

Police later shot and killed Mondal, claiming he tried to grab a weapon during a reenactment of the crime. His mother refused to accept his body, saying, “My son has been punished for what he did. I will not accept his body.” Three other suspects remain in custody.

Political fallout and protests

The case has ignited a political controversy, with the state’s newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused of failing to protect women and girls. The victim was Muslim, and the arrested suspects are Hindu, injecting sectarian tensions into the case. Mass protests have erupted, leaving several police officers injured and at least 40 people detained.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari visited the village and met the victim’s family. He stated, “Our government is committed to curb any such incidents in the state. The police is doing what needs to be done.” However, the family’s damning statement highlights their anger: “Had the police acted earlier, she could have been saved.”

Disturbing details emerge

The girl’s cause of death was drowning, raising fears she may have been alive when dumped into the pond. The incident has renewed calls for stronger protections for women and girls in India, where violence against women remains a persistent crisis.
