A shooting near the Florida Agricultural + Mechanical University campus in Tallahassee has left 11 people with gunshot wounds and another person injured, authorities said. The incident occurred on Perry Street on Saturday night, according to the university, with police counting six adults and six juveniles among the injured.

Police report serious injuries

The Tallahassee police said in a statement that at least three of the shooting victims had sustained serious injuries, while nine others were reported to be in stable condition. Initial findings indicated that a “physical altercation” preceded the shooting, police said, without elaborating further.

Police Chief Lawrence Revell said: “It is especially heartbreaking to know that children are among those injured.” The youngest of those shot was 11, according to the New York Post, though police did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Investigation underway

An altercation at a homecoming party escalated into gunfire, with a fight between two or three individuals leading to shots being fired just before 8pm, the paper added. Police said their violent crimes unit was investigating the circumstances.

Florida A&M said on X: “The safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority.”
