Chelsea and Aston Villa have no January exit clause in Alejandro Garnacho's loan deal at the Midlands club. Manchester United retain a sell-on clause and would be guaranteed a modest windfall should Garnacho's £43million obligation to move to Villa be triggered.
Garnacho's loan details
The winger joined Unai Emery's side on a season-long loan this summer from Chelsea, following a string of underwhelming campaigns for the Argentine. Garnacho's relationship with former United head coach Ruben Amorim deteriorated during his final season at Old Trafford, and he was notably omitted from the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in 2025 — a snub that ultimately sealed his fate at the club.
There had been optimism that a £40m switch to Stamford Bridge last summer could breathe new life into his career. However, the winger failed to make any significant impact in west London as Chelsea endured a torrid campaign, finishing 10th in the Premier League and missing out on European football entirely.
Current situation at Villa
Garnacho was subsequently shipped out on loan to Villa in July, where he has made an underwhelming start. The former United academy product has been restricted to cameo appearances off the bench and is yet to register a goal or assist, though his temporary spell could become a permanent £43m arrangement if specific conditions are fulfilled.
The Telegraph now claim that Chelsea do not possess a January recall clause over Garnacho, while Villa do not have an early exit clause of their own. This means both Chelsea and Villa would need to reach a mutual agreement to terminate Garnacho's loan deal early in the January transfer window should he continue to be confined to Villa's substitutes' bench.
United's potential windfall
United will be monitoring Garnacho's progress at Villa Park with keen interest. Should the Villans activate the clause to make his transfer from Stamford Bridge permanent, it would see Michael Carrick's side pocket approximately £300,000 thanks to the 10 per cent profit sell-on negotiated with Chelsea. But considering his current standing with the team, that is looking increasingly unlikely.
Recent reports suggest that Garnacho is attracting attention from La Liga clubs amid a potential transfer.
Emery urges patience
Emery, however, has urged patience regarding the struggling forward. He said: "We want him at the same level he was for Chelsea in the first part of last season and in Manchester two years ago.
"He is a player we have signed for a long time, and we will help him to feel comfortable and confident to get his quality."
Emery expects the winger to eventually flourish and has praised his attitude in his efforts to secure more playing time under the former Arsenal head coach. He continued: "First is positive - his attitude. His attitude is very important, he is getting the commitment we need to achieve it. Now he needs time. Time, hard work every day, and he is showing it with his attitude. Then, everything he is progressing.
"Every training session we are doing, he is showing he can play matches. He played a few minutes, but it was not enough, firstly due to the minutes he played and the things he showed.
"Progressively, I am seeing him better. The most important thing is being consistent and demanding through the attitude he has. Then, I believe and I trust that he will achieve his best performance."
