A 62-year-old British woman was discovered dead in her private cabin aboard a cruise ship while it was moored off the Greek island of Santorini. Staff entering the cabin on Sunday found her unresponsive, and local authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into her death.
Investigation underway
The woman's body was transported by boat to the nearby port of Athinios in the early hours and then taken to the General Hospital of Thira, where doctors pronounced her dead. The Thira Port Authority has opened a probe. The body is scheduled to be transferred to the Piraeus Forensic Service for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Police have stated there is no indication of foul play, with initial findings pointing to a sudden health-related death. The cruise ship, which sails under the Marshall Islands flag, has not been named by authorities. After the woman was taken to hospital, the vessel reportedly resumed its normal Aegean Sea route.
Similar incident last year
This incident follows a similar case in 2025, when an 83-year-old Scottish man was found dead in the swimming pool of the Marella Voyager while docked in Naples. Despite efforts by passengers and crew to revive him, he could not be saved. Police ruled out criminal activity, concluding he had taken ill while in the water. The ship was allowed to continue its Mediterranean journey. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed it was supporting the family of the deceased man in Italy.
