A devastating development has emerged in the search for two-year-old Gus Lamont, as Police Scotland confirmed the discovery of a body in the River Tay on Wednesday afternoon.
The heartbreaking announcement brings a tragic conclusion to the intensive three-day search operation that had gripped the Perth community and captured national attention.
The Final Hours of the Search
Emergency services had been conducting an extensive land and water search since Monday evening when the toddler was reported missing from the North Muirton area of Perth. The operation involved multiple agencies including the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard, and specialist mountain rescue teams.
Police Scotland confirmed that formal identification has taken place, and the body recovered from the river is that of the missing two-year-old. Chief Inspector Nicky McFarlane expressed the force's profound sadness, stating: "This is a tragic outcome and our thoughts are with Gus's family at this incredibly difficult time."
Community in Mourning
The local community in Perth has been left reeling by the devastating news. Residents had joined emergency services in the search effort, holding onto hope that the young child would be found safe.
Floral tributes have begun appearing near the river as shocked locals come to terms with the tragic outcome. One neighbour described the atmosphere as "utterly heartbreaking," adding that "everyone was praying for a different outcome."
Support for the Grieving Family
Police have confirmed that the family are being supported by specialist officers during this unimaginably difficult time. The force has asked for privacy for the grieving relatives as they process their loss.
Chief Inspector McFarlane extended gratitude to all those involved in the search operation, acknowledging the " tremendous efforts" of emergency services and community members who had rallied together during the intensive search.
While the investigation continues, police have confirmed they are not treating the death as suspicious. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course as standard procedure.
