Disturbing footage has captured the terrifying moments leading up to a fatal highway collision that claimed one life and left a truck driver in a critical condition. The incident occurred on Tuesday in Burpengary, within Queensland's Moreton Bay region, prompting a major police response.
Chaotic Scene on Bruce Highway
Emergency services were called to the Bruce Highway following multiple reports of vehicles travelling in the wrong direction. A white Isuzu truck, moving south in the northbound lanes, collided head-on with a Honda Accord. The impact caused the Honda to burst into flames immediately.
Victims and Injuries
The driver of the Honda, a 26-year-old man from Redcliffe, died at the scene. The truck driver was rushed to hospital with significant head, neck, and pelvic injuries, remaining in a life-threatening condition as of the latest updates.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating reports that the truck was being pursued by two 4WDs, which were also travelling on the wrong side of the highway prior to the collision. Witness accounts and footage from passing motorists are being scrutinised as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Eyewitness Accounts
Occupants of a southbound vehicle filmed the truck travelling at a similar speed to their own car. In the footage, a woman can be heard exclaiming, 'that's insane,' moments before a loud crash and a burst of flames are witnessed.
Other motorists recalled seeing the truck being chased before it veered into oncoming traffic. One woman posted online: 'Nearly had a head-on with the truck driving the wrong way on the highway being chased by two white 4WDs that had worksite strobes on top.'
Another witness added: 'The truck had no lights on either. We were driving 110km/h, and we weren't catching up to the truck, so we thought he was going 120km/h.' A third described the crash scene as making him 'feel sick to the stomach.'
Highway Closure and Aftermath
All northbound lanes of the Bruce Highway were closed for approximately seven hours as crash investigators examined the scene. The closure caused significant disruption to traffic during the investigation period.
Appeal for Information
Police inquiries are continuing, and authorities are urging anyone with information or footage related to the incident to contact Crime Stoppers or Policelink. The investigation aims to determine the exact circumstances leading to the tragic collision.
