Residents in Gedling, Nottinghamshire, have labelled a set of wonky double yellow lines a "joke" and an "embarrassment" after the botched road markings had to be repainted. Pictures show the crooked lines snaking for more than 300 metres along Arnold Lane, following a recent resurfacing.
Council admits work 'unacceptable'
Nottinghamshire County Council admitted the work was "unacceptable" and ordered the contractor to repaint the lines at their own expense. One resident said: "The lines look like something my five-year-old grandson would draw. Some people joked they must have been done after a boozy night at the pub. They look awful."
Andy Howell, who lives nearby, added: "It was the rushed of rush jobs. The word shoddy doesn't even cover it." The 45-year-old said: "It's pretty embarrassing when you think how much money was spent on the markings. Is it much to ask for road markings to be straight?"
Local councillor 'laughing' at the sight
Mike Adams, Conservative councillor for the nearby Carlton East ward, said he pulled over because he was laughing so much when he drove past. He told the BBC: "It was a bit like they were doing a downhill ski. A lot of people have been quite jovial about it but there's a number who have asked, 'How is this being replaced? Are we going to have to spend out again out of council tax to cover this bill?'"
He added: "I really, really don't want that to be the case. We need to get whoever did this work back and do the repair work free of charge."
Contractor to repaint at own expense
A Nottinghamshire County Council highways spokesperson said: "Resurfacing took place recently on Arnold Lane in Gedling as part of our record investment in Nottinghamshire's roads. The repainting of road markings following the resurfacing does not meet our quality standards and we have made it clear to the contractor who delivered the work on behalf of Via East Midlands that it is unacceptable."
They added: "Defect notices have been raised with the contractor who will be returning to Arnold Lane later this week to repaint the lines at their own expense."
