Whitley Bay driver avoids jail over 130mph A1 chase

Brandon Durning, 25, of Whitley Bay, has avoided jail after leading police on a dangerous chase at speeds of up to 130mph on the A1 near Morpeth in Northumberland.

Durning, who has 87 offences on his record, sped away from officers after they tried to stop his VW Tiguan in the early hours of June 10. Police ended the three-minute pursuit by boxing in his vehicle.

Court hearing and sentence

Newcastle Crown Court heard that Durning had threatened to crash his car to harm himself. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was given a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Recorder Simon Eckersley told Durning: "You're only 25 and yet you have appeared before the criminal courts 48 previous times for a total of 87 offences. You have an appalling criminal record for somebody your age."

Additional penalties

Durning was also banned from driving for 18 months, ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work and told he must pass an extended test before getting his licence back.
