A 45-year-old man has been arrested after a high-speed police chase involving a suspected stolen car that damaged several police vehicles and nearly hit pedestrians in Essex.
Essex Police attempted to stop a black Jaguar on the A127 towards Southend at around 04:00 BST. The vehicle crashed into a central reservation before continuing into the city, where it collided with a police car, smashing a window, and drove through a red light in the Queensway area.
The Jaguar later drove at a police vehicle in a car park off Coleman Street before heading towards London on the A127 and entering the M25, where the Metropolitan Police joined the pursuit. The car was eventually stopped as it approached Brentwood, with the front driver tyre missing and the front passenger wheel detached.
The suspect, from Romford, has been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop, and failing to provide a breath test. Detective Superintendent Gary Biddle praised the officers' 'tenacity and bravery' and noted that the incident ended without serious injury, though it could have been much worse.
