Motorists in the UK could be hit with a £1,000 fine this summer for failing to keep their windscreen clean, according to experts. The warning comes from Hippo Leasing, which highlights that a dirty car can lead to significant penalties under the Highway Code.
Annex 6 of the Highway Code states that “windscreens and windows MUST be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision.” Failure to comply can result in a £1,000 fine for not having a full view of the road or traffic ahead. Drivers are advised to ensure their screenwash is topped up to maintain clear visibility.
Beyond windscreen cleanliness, drivers should also check that their number plate is visible, as mud splashes can obscure it. A dirty or unreadable plate can lead to fines and may fail to be detected by speed cameras or police checks.
Neglecting car cleaning can also result in costly repairs. Rust from dirt and grime can cost an average of £361.73 to treat, while scratches from dust particles may require £90 for light surface scratch repair. Regular cleaning can help avoid these expenses.
