A major police incident forced the closure of the iconic Tyne Bridge for several hours this morning, triggering severe traffic disruption across Newcastle and Gateshead.
Emergency Response and Bridge Closure
Emergency services were called to the bridge at 4:42 am on Wednesday, 4th December 2025. Both Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) attended the scene. The NEAS confirmed it dispatched a significant response, including two ambulance crews, two clinical team leaders, and two specialist Hazardous Area Response Teams. One patient was transported to hospital for further treatment.
As a result, the A167 over the Tyne Bridge was closed in both directions. The vital crossing, which connects the city centres of Newcastle and Gateshead, remained shut for over an hour during the morning rush period, reopening at approximately 8:15 am.
Widespread Travel Chaos and Long Delays
The closure caused immediate and extensive travel chaos. Motorists faced delays of up to 40 minutes as alternative routes became gridlocked. Several miles of queues built up on the A167 and surrounding roads, with congestion particularly severe through Gateshead and into Newcastle.
Even after the bridge reopened, significant residual delays persisted throughout the morning, as traffic systems struggled to recover from the peak-time disruption.
