Tragedy on the A19: Teenage Passenger Dies in Fiery Collision

A teenage girl has lost her life and a young man is in a critical condition following a devastating crash on the A19 in Sunderland. Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway between Seaham and the Herrington Interchange just after 11pm last night after receiving reports of a serious incident.

Details of the Devastating Incident

A yellow Vauxhall Corsa, driven by a 19-year-old man with a 17-year-old female passenger, left the carriageway and was involved in a collision. The vehicle subsequently caught fire. Although the blaze was extinguished shortly after by fire crews, the teenage girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 19-year-old driver was rushed to hospital by ambulance, where he remains fighting for his life in a critical condition. Northumbria Police have confirmed that the next of kin for both teenagers have been informed and are receiving support.

Police Investigation and Witness Appeal

Sergeant John Sanderson, of the Northumbria Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, led the appeal for information. He expressed the force's sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the girl who tragically passed away.

'A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is under way and a number of enquiries have already been carried out,' said Sgt Sanderson. 'I would ask anyone with information regarding what took place - particularly those with dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision - to contact us.'

The critical piece of carriageway was closed overnight for investigation and recovery work, reopening just before 10am this morning. The closure caused significant travel disruption, with motorists facing long delays and diversions.
