A community in North Yorkshire is in mourning after a 16-year-old sixth form student was killed in a devastating road collision involving a minibus and a car.
Victim identified as beloved student 'Ellie'
Eleanor Hague, known affectionately as Ellie, has been named as the teenager who lost her life in the incident on Monday, 2 December. The young woman, from Sherburn-in-Elmet, was a pupil at Tadcaster Grammar School. Her family is currently being supported by specialist police officers as they come to terms with their unimaginable loss.
Details of the Tadcaster collision
The crash occurred at approximately 12:28pm on Toulston Lane at its junction with Rudgate. According to police reports, a light-coloured Hyundai i10 car entered Toulston Lane from Rudgate and collided with a white Mercedes Sprinter minibus. The minibus was travelling in the direction of Sherburn at the time.
The minibus was carrying nine passengers aged between 16 and 18, who were students from the shared sixth form operated by Tadcaster Grammar School and Sherburn High School. The male driver of the minibus was also on board.
Injuries and police investigation
Tragically, Eleanor Hague was pronounced dead following the collision. Another teenage girl sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital; her condition is not believed to be life-threatening. The remaining passengers and the minibus driver received treatment for minor injuries.
A 40-year-old woman from Leeds, who was driving the Hyundai, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She has since been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.
The road, which was closed overnight and throughout Tuesday to allow for a thorough investigation, has now been reopened to traffic.
