A woman has died and a man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a car mounted a kerb and struck them outside the Melbourne Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred shortly before 5pm on Langs Road in Ascot Vale, where the Supanova Comic Con event was being held. Victoria Police said a grey Toyota mounted the kerb and hit two pedestrians.
“Sadly, one of the pedestrians, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene,” police said in a statement. “The second pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.”
The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and is assisting police with inquiries. The circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be established, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Supanova Comic Con is a major pop culture event that draws thousands of fans each year. Celebrities including Stranger Things actor Jamie Campbell Bower and Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, were scheduled to appear at the expo.
