Nine-Year-Old Boy Allegedly Caught Driving on NSW Highway in Early Hours

In a shocking incident, New South Wales police have alleged that a nine-year-old boy was caught steering a car on a major highway after 1am. The event occurred on the Great Western Highway near Mount Lambie, approximately 120 kilometres west of Sydney, raising serious concerns about road safety and child welfare.

Details of the Alleged Incident

According to police statements, the incident took place at 1:35am on Saturday, 7th March. A seatbelt detection camera captured the vehicle with an unrestrained child sitting on the lap of a 45-year-old man. Police allege that the man was experiencing significant fatigue and was operating the pedals while the boy steered the car from his lap.

Following inquiries, officers attended the man's home in Lightning Ridge on Wednesday, 11th March, and spoke with him. He was subsequently issued a court notice and charged with multiple offences, including:

Legal Proceedings and Broader Context

The man is due to appear at Walgett Local Court on Tuesday, 28th April. NSW police have also notified the Department of Communities and Justice regarding the matter, highlighting potential child protection issues.

This case echoes a similar incident from 2017, when a 12-year-old boy was stopped by police after attempting to drive solo across Australia. In that instance, the boy had already covered 1,300 kilometres and was en route to Perth in his family's car before being involved in a crash and pulled over by highway patrol officers at Broken Hill in far west NSW.

Such events underscore ongoing challenges in enforcing road safety regulations and protecting young individuals from harm. Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of responsible driving and adherence to traffic laws to prevent such dangerous situations.
