A 47-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a road traffic offence after a car crashed into a building in East Kilbride, prompting police to close the road and evacuate residents from nearby flats.
The incident occurred on Main Street in the Village area of East Kilbride at around 10:20am on Sunday, July 25. Emergency services attended the scene, but no injuries were reported.
Evacuations and structural assessment
Residents living in flats above the building were evacuated as a precaution while structural engineers assessed the property. Police cordoned off the road, and the damaged vehicle was later removed by a recovery truck.
Images from the scene showed the mangled front end of the black car outside two shops. The shop windows appeared undamaged, but an adjacent wall was hit, leaving brickwork on the pavement. A significant amount of wreckage was visible after the car was towed away.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Main Street in East Kilbride is closed after a car struck a building around 10.20am this morning, Sunday, 25 July, 2026. Emergency services are in attendance, and no injuries have been reported. Several flats have been evacuated as a precaution, and the road is closed while the building is assessed by structural engineers. A 47-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a Road Traffic Offence. He will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal. The public is asked to avoid the area."
The man is expected to appear in court at a later date.
