Drivers are facing severe disruption on the M62 this evening after a serious collision forced the closure of the motorway in both directions.
The incident occurred between junction 22 at Rishworth Moor and junction 23 at Outlane, bringing traffic to a complete standstill during the busy evening period.
Emergency Response
Multiple emergency service vehicles rushed to the scene following reports of a serious collision. National Highways confirmed the closure affects both carriageways between the two junctions.
Motorists reported seeing numerous police cars, ambulance vehicles and fire engines attending the incident, with traffic backing up rapidly in both directions.
Travel Chaos
Significant queues have formed on both sides of the motorway, with westbound traffic affected for approximately four miles. Drivers are being warned to expect considerable delays and to seek alternative routes where possible.
National Highways North West posted an urgent update on social media, stating: "The M62 in West Yorkshire is closed in both directions between J22 and J23 due to a serious collision. Emergency services are working at the scene. Please allow extra journey time if travelling in the area this evening."
Alternative Routes
Drivers caught in the disruption are being advised to follow the solid triangle diversion route. Traffic is being diverted via local roads, though these are also experiencing increased congestion as vehicles seek alternative paths.
The closure comes during peak travel hours, compounding problems for commuters and freight vehicles using this key trans-Pennine route.
There is currently no estimated time for when the motorway might reopen as emergency services continue their work at the scene. Motorists are urged to check live traffic updates before commencing their journeys.
