A 15-year-old boy has died following a serious road traffic collision on the M60 in Greater Manchester on Sunday evening. The motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 19 and 22 near Alkrington Interchange, causing significant disruption for thousands of Oasis fans heading to a concert at Heaton Park.
Police confirmed the fatality on Monday morning. The incident occurred shortly after 5pm on Sunday, leading to the closure of the M60 clockwise between J19 and J21, and anti-clockwise between J22 and J19. National Highways warned the road would be closed for a protracted period, with delays of up to 45 minutes.
Some concertgoers abandoned their vehicles and walked along the carriageway in an attempt to reach the venue. A Bee Network statement advised that the closure could impact journeys to Heaton Park for the Oasis concert. Greater Manchester Police urged people to avoid the area and warned of severe delays on surrounding roads, which were expected to become gridlocked after the concert.
National Highways said the motorway would remain closed until midnight. Traffic was backed up to J23, with some vehicles being released from the closure. Emergency services, including the North West Ambulance Service, attended the scene. Motorists were advised to allow extra time or delay their journeys.
