The M25 has reopened after a three-vehicle crash closed 13 miles of the clockwise carriageway near Leatherhead in Surrey. The collision, which occurred at 04:45 BST, involved an articulated lorry, a London taxi, and a red Citroen.
The lorry driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries, while occupants of the other vehicles were unhurt. The lorry jackknifed across the carriageway, and a large diesel spill complicated recovery efforts, according to Highways England network manager Laura Williams.
Drivers reported being stuck for hours without water. Kyron Smith, travelling to Thorpe Park, said he had been queuing for about three hours to join the M25 at junction eight. 'Nobody is moving. They haven't got us any water and they haven't let us turn back,' he said.
Highways England said delays should now reduce. The motorway was closed between junction eight for Reigate and junction ten for Wisley. Police are appealing for witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to contact Surrey Police.
