A lorry driver is in a critical condition after a serious crash on the M62 near Rochdale. The incident occurred at approximately 08:15 BST when a lorry crossed the central reservation and collided with several vehicles on the opposite carriageway.
The driver was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. The M62 remains closed in both directions between junction 21 at Milnrow and junction 22 on the A672 Ripponden, while emergency services and recovery teams work at the scene.
Police have confirmed that the lorry was carrying 44 tonnes of butter, which must be removed before the vehicle can be recovered. A substantial diesel spill has also damaged the carriageway, requiring resurfacing before all lanes can reopen.
Highways England reported that the lorry crossed from the eastbound to the westbound carriageway, colliding with two other lorries, a van, and a car. All traffic previously stuck within the closed section has now been released.
