Firefighters are battling a significant warehouse fire close to one of the UK's largest shopping centres in Sheffield. The blaze, which sent a large plume of smoke into the sky, broke out near the Meadowhall complex on Friday evening.
Emergency Response in Full Force
South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service confirmed a major response is underway at the scene on Meadowhall Road. Crews were first called to the incident at approximately 6pm on Friday 2 January 2026.
The service has deployed substantial resources to contain the flames. A spokesperson stated they have 10 fire engines and two turntable ladders in attendance. A high-volume pump is also being used to support firefighting efforts, with crews reportedly drawing water from the nearby River Don using hoses.
Road Closures and Public Health Advice
The fire has led to significant local disruption. Authorities have closed Meadowhall Road between Meadowhall Interchange and Amos Road and are urging the public to completely avoid the area.
Due to the substantial smoke plume, residents living nearby have been advised to take precautionary health measures. People are being asked to keep their windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering their homes.
Containment Achieved But Work Continues
Firefighters have successfully managed to contain the fire, preventing its spread to neighbouring properties. However, the scale of the incident means crews expect to remain on site for many hours.
The fire service has indicated they anticipate being at the location until at least midnight. Police and ambulance services are also supporting the multi-agency response. Fortunately, there are currently no reports of any injuries related to the incident.
