Two men who drove hundreds of miles from Scotland to North Wales to film a YouTube video of themselves speeding in Porsches have been banned from driving. David Murray, 30, of Aberdeen, reached 116mph in a 60mph zone, while Timur Khayrov, also 30, of Glasgow, hit 105mph, magistrates at Llandudno heard.
The pair were caught after police spotted a video uploaded in March last year showing the high-performance cars on country roads. The footage, which included commentary describing the route as the “greatest driving road in the world,” was played in court.
Khayrov admitted dangerous driving in a Porsche 911 on the B4391 at Bala and Blaenau Ffestiniog on March 16 last year. Murray admitted a similar offence in a Porsche on the B4501 at Cader and Cerrigydrudion – part of the “EVO Triangle” route made famous by a motoring magazine.
Prosecutor Nicola Williams said there was deliberate disregard for the safety of other road-users and showing off. The recording also referenced attempts to avoid average speed cameras. Defence lawyer Hojol Uddin said: “They didn’t expect a hobby to turn into this situation. This is a lesson.”
The pair, said to have very successful professional backgrounds, were granted bail with interim driving bans until sentenced by a crown court judge. Court chairwoman Alwen Davies said they needed greater punishment than magistrates could impose.
