A fundraising appeal for the family of a 16-year-old schoolgirl who died after being hit by a car near her school in north London has raised almost £90,000.
The campaign was launched following the death of Melissa Premaratne, who was fatally injured in a collision near Highgate School on 25 September. Friends of the family, Julie Welch and Shan Li, set up a GoFundMe page to support Melissa's loved ones as they come to terms with their loss.
Appeal describes 'rock' of her family
The appeal describes Melissa as an exceptionally talented student who achieved 10 grade 9s at GCSE and hoped to study Mathematics and Philosophy at the University of Oxford.
In a tribute on the fundraising page, organisers said: “Melissa was the rock that held her family together and mature beyond her years, providing support to her Mum and younger sister during the difficult times they have faced.
“She was also an exceptionally kind, funny, talented and a wonderful friend to so many. Her beautiful smile won people’s hearts, and her caring and thoughtful nature brought joy to those around her.”
Donations surpass target
The fundraiser aims to ease some of the financial pressures facing the family in the weeks ahead. Donations will help cover funeral-related costs and enable Melissa's grandparents to travel from Asia to attend her funeral and support relatives in London.
An outpouring of donations from friends, neighbours, fellow pupils and members of the wider community has already surpassed the original £55,000 target. More than £88,000 had been raised by Sunday evening.
The appeal organisers said the response reflected the impact Melissa had on those around her and the affection in which she was held.
Police investigation continues
The fundraiser comes as police continue their investigation into the circumstances of the crash. A 68-year-old man remains on bail on suspicion of causing death by careless driving following the incident.
Tributes have continued to be paid to Melissa, with supporters remembering her as an academically gifted teenager with a bright future ahead of her. Those wishing to support the family can donate via the GoFundMe page, "Melissa's Memorial Fund".
The fundraising page says contributions will help ensure Melissa's family can focus on grieving and remembering her life while receiving practical support during an exceptionally difficult period.
