Four members of the same family, including a seven-month-old baby, have died in a horror crash on the A38 in Derby. The victims have been named as Abu Camara, 36, his wife, 30, their young daughter, and an 18-year-old woman believed to be a cousin. The crash occurred at around 11pm on Saturday when the red Hyundai they were travelling in struck trees near the Toyota Island.
Driver arrested and bailed
Derbyshire Police said the driver, a 33-year-old man, suffered serious injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later bailed. All those involved are from Leeds in West Yorkshire. The force added that the relatives of those involved are aware and are receiving support from specialist officers.
Tributes from the Gambian community
The family were from the Gambian community in Leeds, where people have spoken of their kindness. The Gambia Welfare Society said on Facebook that Abu Camara was a "dedicated servant" to the local community who mentored children through football. "He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service," the society wrote.
The High Commission of The Gambia in the UK also commented, confirming the deaths of four Gambian nationals. A spokesperson said: "According to information received, the four individuals were travelling together from Birmingham to Leeds when their vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. All four occupants sadly lost their lives." The High Commission extended its deepest condolences and coordinated with the family's liaison representative.
Police appeal for witnesses
Derbyshire Police is appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage. A statement read: "A driver arrested in connection with a fatal collision in which four people died has been bailed. We were called out to reports that a red Hyundai car had left the carriageway and crashed into trees on the A38, close to the Toyota Island, at about 11pm on Saturday (25 July). Two women, aged 18 and 30, along with a 36-year-old man, were declared dead at the scene. A baby girl was taken to hospital where she was sadly pronounced dead a short while later. All four were passengers in the vehicle."
