A devastating early morning collision between a taxi and another car in Bolton has claimed four lives and left five others injured, with police launching a major investigation into the incident.
Scene of devastation on Wigan Road
The serious crash occurred at approximately 12.45am on Wigan Road in Bolton, Greater Manchester. It involved a Citroen Picasso private hire vehicle and a red Seat Leon. Residents reported being woken by a 'very loud bang' and described the harrowing sight of emergency services performing CPR on injured passengers at the roadside.
Both drivers were killed in the impact, along with two passengers who were travelling in the Seat. Another five passengers were taken to hospital and are currently receiving treatment for their injuries. Photographs from the scene showed both vehicles had sustained catastrophic damage, with the front end of one car almost completely destroyed.
Police investigation and community response
A large police cordon remained in place throughout the day as officers from the Greater Manchester Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) began their work to establish the cause of the tragedy. The SCIU has appealed for witnesses and information.
In the wake of the crash, rumours began to circulate on social media suggesting the incident was the result of a police chase. These claims were swiftly addressed and dismissed by local representatives. Councillor Ayyub Patel, who represents the Rumworth ward, stated he had spoken directly with officers who confirmed that no police or other authorities were involved in any pursuit.
"This was an unfortunate and deeply distressing incident, resulting in fatalities and a number of injuries," Cllr Patel said. "My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected, and my thoughts remain with all those impacted. I ask the community to allow the investigation to proceed and to avoid speculation during this difficult time."
