Chelsea footballer Wesley Fofana has accumulated an astonishing 50 penalty points on his driving licence after being convicted of yet another speeding offence. The £70million defender, who is already serving a lengthy ban, was caught behind the wheel of his £300,000 white Rolls Royce Cullinan.
The Latest Offence and Court Appearance
The 24-year-old French national was caught by an automatic camera doing 54mph in a 40mph zone on the A316 Chertsey Road in Twickenham, south-west London, in the early hours of February 27 last year. Fofana, believed to be in Portugal, did not appear at Lavender Hill Magistrates' Court but pleaded guilty to the charge via his legal team.
This marks his tenth driving conviction in less than a year. Magistrate Alan Jefferson labelled him a 'habitual offender'. The court fined Fofana a total of £1,062, comprising a £666 penalty, a £266 surcharge, and £130 in costs, and endorsed his licence with three more points.
A History of Dangerous Driving
Fofana is already disqualified from driving until May 13, 2027 for a previous dangerous driving offence. The court heard his licence record showed 47 points from a conviction last May, where he was handed a two-year ban and a £7,569 fine for eight speeding offences in various luxury vehicles.
His lawyer, Stephen Oldham, stated Fofana would have to retake his driving test before obtaining another licence. The magistrate noted they had considered his £200,000-a-week income and early guilty plea when determining the sentence.
Previous Incidents and Community Service
Last October, Fofana was spared jail after pleading guilty to dangerous driving. Footage showed him erratically undertaking using the hard shoulder of a Surrey motorway in his white Lamborghini, an act a judge branded 'ridiculous'.
He was ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid community service and was criticised by District Judge Julie Cooper for setting a dangerous example to his young fans. The defender, who lives in a £3.5million mansion near Chelsea's Cobham training ground, has also been disqualified for six months in January 2023 for separate speeding offences.
Despite his lucrative seven-year contract with Chelsea, Fofana's time on the pitch has been limited by serious injuries, including an ACL tear and a hamstring problem requiring surgery. He has made only ten Premier League appearances this season.
