Motorists are being warned to familiarise themselves with the meaning of the 'clearway' road sign, as many remain unaware of its implications. The sign, a blue circle with a red cross, indicates that stopping is prohibited under any circumstances.
Nick Holmes, technical training manager at Instarmac, emphasised the importance of understanding road signs. "Knowing and understanding road signs is vital to being a safe driver and limiting the stress experienced by yourself and others," he said. He noted that while some signs are common, others may seem like novelties but are equally critical.
Clearways are stretches of road where stopping or parking is forbidden at all times. These are often found on major urban roads and are marked by rectangular 'red route clearway' signs at the start and end, along with single or double red lines on the road. The restrictions also extend to footpaths on red routes.
WeBuyAnyCar warned: "You cannot stop on a clearway. Once you see a sign indicating that you are on a clearway, you cannot stop for any reason or at any time, until you see the sign signalling the clearway has ended."
Ignoring the sign can lead to severe penalties, including a driving ban, penalty points, or a fine of up to £1,000. Drivers are urged to stay alert and comply with all road signs to avoid these consequences.
