Dr Marta Shahbazi, a Cambridge professor who was reported missing after a train crash in Spain, has been confirmed dead. The announcement was made by the Spanish Centre for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CiMUS) institute via social media.
The crash, involving two trains, occurred on Wednesday, 28 October, near Los Yébenes, Toledo, in Spain. At least 69 people were killed and more than 100 sustained injuries in the disaster.
Confirmation of Death
Earlier this week, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge announced it was "deeply concerned" for the whereabouts of one of its researchers, Dr Marta Shahbazi. Dr Shahbazi, who also held the position of affiliate assistant professor at Cambridge University, has since been confirmed as one of the victims.
The CiMUS statement read: "The CiMUS community would like to express its support and deepest sympathies to our dear PI María José Alonso, following the death of her niece, Marta Shahbazi, in the railway accident that occurred on October 28."
Impact and Condolences
"Marta was a brilliant young researcher, Group Leader at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Affiliate Associate Professor at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, University of Cambridge," the statement continued. "At this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to María José and her family, as well as to Marta Shahbazi's colleagues and collaborators. Our thoughts are with them all, and we wish them strength and comfort as they come to terms with this profound loss."
