A young boy has tragically lost his life after a car crashed into a bottle shop at a busy Canberra shopping centre on Sunday morning.
Details of the Tragic Collision
The incident occurred at approximately 10:20am on Sunday, 18 January 2026. Emergency services were called to the Southlands Shopping Centre in Mawson following reports that a vehicle had left the road and collided with the storefront of a BWS outlet.
Upon arrival, paramedics from the ACT Ambulance Service discovered a four-year-old boy who had been struck by the car. He received immediate treatment at the scene before being rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Despite the best efforts of medical teams, the child could not be saved and was declared deceased a short time later. This tragic event marks the second road fatality in the Australian Capital Territory for 2026.
The driver of the vehicle involved was also taken to hospital for observation as a precaution. The ACT Policing's Major Collision Team has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Appeal for Witnesses
ACT Police have issued an appeal for information. A spokesperson stated: "Anyone who witnessed the incident who has not already spoken to police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers."
