Mohammed Ibrahim, 25, has been sentenced to 13 years and three months in prison for causing the deaths of Amanda Riley, 49, and Linda Philips, 72, in a high-speed crash on Boxing Day 2023. The incident occurred in the Shard End area of Birmingham, where Ibrahim was racing another BMW at speeds of up to 84mph in a 30mph zone.
Birmingham Crown Court heard that Ibrahim's BMW 420 was travelling 'in convoy' with a BMW X3 when it collided with a quad bike while overtaking, then struck an MG car carrying four generations of the same family. Both women died at the scene, and four other family members suffered injuries including a fractured sternum, a broken leg, and lung bruising.
Judge Paul Farrer KC noted that passer-by Stuart Bates courageously helped passengers escape from the burning MG, potentially saving three lives. The judge ordered that Bates receive £300 from public funds. Ibrahim was also banned from driving for 18 years and nine months.
The judge described Ibrahim's driving as 'grossly irresponsible' and noted that he fled the scene despite knowing he had caused a catastrophic accident. However, the judge accepted that the unidentified rider of the quad bike, who ran a red light, made a significant contribution to the crash, which was treated as mitigation.
Ibrahim pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Senior Crown Prosecutor Neelam Shafiq said the sentence sends a clear message that dangerous driving will not be tolerated.
