Elderly Driver Flees Scene After Collision
A 99-year-old motorist stands accused of a serious hit-and-run incident that left an 80-year-old bicyclist fighting for his life in a quiet New Jersey town this past weekend, according to law enforcement officials.
The alarming event unfolded on Saturday around 12:36 p.m. on Main Street in Helmetta, a small suburb approximately 41 miles southwest of New York City.
Emergency Response and Victim's Condition
Upon arrival, officers from the Jamesburg Police Department discovered the octogenarian cyclist had sustained what they described as "serious bodily injuries" directly resulting from the collision.
Emergency medical services promptly transported the victim to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, located nearly ten miles from the crash site. Authorities have confirmed the man remains in a critical but stable condition.
Swift Police Action and Investigation
Meanwhile, the nonagenarian driver allegedly fled the scene immediately following the impact. However, police successfully located the woman shortly afterwards in Spotswood, a neighbouring borough just two miles down the road.
To facilitate a thorough on-scene investigation, Main Street in Helmetta was temporarily closed to all traffic. The case is now being jointly examined by the Jamesburg Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
It is noteworthy that Jamesburg police provide patrol services for Helmetta, as the tiny borough—spanning less than a square mile—does not maintain its own independent police force.
At this preliminary stage, it remains unclear whether the 99-year-old driver will face formal charges. Authorities have not publicly released the names of either the driver or the victim involved in this distressing case.
