A 92-year-old driver crashed her car into a supermarket in Los Angeles on Thursday, killing three people and injuring six others. The incident occurred at the 99 Ranch Market in the Westwood neighbourhood shortly after noon, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The driver, who was behind the wheel of a Toyota Prius, first struck a cyclist before losing control and ploughing into the bakery section of the store. Three victims trapped under the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene: two men aged 55 and 30, and a 42-year-old woman.
Four people were taken to hospital, including two 35-year-old men in serious condition and two men aged 38 and 37 with minor injuries. Two others declined medical treatment. The condition of the cyclist remains unknown.
Fire Department spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz confirmed the driver was cooperating with investigators and undergoing a medical evaluation. Police Captain Anthony Espinoza said none of the victims were students at the nearby University of California, Los Angeles. A building safety inspection found no structural damage from the crash.
