Six diners are being investigated by police after allegedly leaving a seafood restaurant in Devon without paying a bill of almost £600. The group of three men and three women ate at The Oyster Shack in Bigbury last Saturday, ordering four lobsters and a fruits de mer seafood platter before slipping away one by one.
The owner of the restaurant, Kieron Vanstone, said the group left in a black Range Rover and have not responded to repeated calls. 'We've given them a deadline for response but they're still dodging our calls. We have left the matter with the police,' he said.
Restaurant appeals for vigilance
The Oyster Shack posted on Facebook that the unpaid bill is a financial loss and upsetting for staff, who worked hard to provide a warm welcome. The restaurant shared the story not to shame anyone, but to warn other businesses to stay vigilant. Although the restaurant's CCTV was out of order, a fellow diner noted the registration plate of the black Range Rover, which has been handed to authorities.
Police investigation ongoing
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson confirmed they are looking into the incident and appealed for information. 'Police are aware of an incident where a number of customers left The Oyster Shack, Bigbury, without paying their bill on Saturday 25 July. Enquiries into this matter are ongoing.
