Shoplifter caught with eggs, toilet roll hidden in secret skirt at London Co-op
Shoplifter's secret skirt stash exposed in London Co-op

In a scene more reminiscent of a magic trick than a retail crime, a shoplifter was apprehended at a Co-op in West London after a suspicious customer noticed her skirt was "bulging" and "shifting unnaturally." The incident, which unfolded yesterday afternoon at the Earl's Court branch, revealed a hidden compartment sewn into the garment, stuffed with everyday essentials.

The Mary Poppins Skirt: A Secret Stash Revealed

Staff and onlookers were left astonished as the woman began to produce a surprising array of items from a concealed flap under her clothes. What initially seemed like an unremarkable shopper moving through the aisles was, in fact, a brazen theft in progress. The total haul was valued at over £20 and included a jar of Bonne Maman preserve priced at £3.80.

The extent of the hidden loot became clear as she surrendered the goods. First came the jar of jam, followed by three boxes of eggs, each worth £3.20. The pièce de résistance, however, was a bulky pack of nine toilet rolls, which she somehow managed to conceal alongside other items within the skirt's secret pocket.

Confrontation at the Door

The woman was stopped near the store's exit after the vigilant customer raised the alarm. During the confrontation, which was captured, the thief could be heard telling staff, "I'm giving you back," before quickly becoming aggressive. She warned, "You don't f****** touch me," as a male employee urged her to "Hurry up" with returning the stolen items. Her retort was a stream of expletives directed at the staff.

An onlooker described the bizarre scene, noting that the woman's behaviour had been entirely normal until the strange movement of her skirt gave her away. "Nothing appeared unusual until a fellow customer noticed that the woman's skirt seemed to be bulging and shifting unnaturally as she walked," they said.

Police and Retailer Respond

The Metropolitan Police and the Co-op have been approached for comment on the incident, which highlights the ongoing challenge retailers face with theft. The inventive method of concealment, dubbed a "Mary Poppins-esque skirt," demonstrates the lengths to which some individuals will go. This case serves as a stark reminder of the impact of retail crime on businesses and communities, prompting calls for continued vigilance from both staff and the public.
