A passenger on a flight from Poland was arrested at London Luton Airport after trying to open an emergency exit door mid-air, police have confirmed. Fellow travellers intervened and wrestled the man to the floor before the plane landed.
The incident occurred on Wizz Air flight W61005 from Katowice International Airport shortly before 23:00 BST on Saturday. Witness David Salon said the man, in his 20s, moved from the front of the plane and sat next to a woman by the emergency exit over the wing. "Suddenly he lunged across her and tried to open the door. She was terrified," Mr Salon said.
Three Polish men in the row behind, along with other passengers, subdued the suspect by sitting on him until crew members restrained his hands with seatbelts used in safety demonstrations. The man had been acting strangely on the bus to the aircraft in Poland, according to Mr Salon.
Bedfordshire Police confirmed the arrest on suspicion of endangering an aircraft. The passenger was taken to hospital for minor injuries and is now being questioned. Wizz Air said there was "zero tolerance" for abusive behaviour and that crew followed standard procedures to ensure safety.
