Bianca Robinson went to Hutchinson Funeral Home in Detroit, Michigan, to pay her respects to her mother, Kimberly Moore, but was stunned to discover the woman in the casket was not her mother. When the family raised the alarm, a staff member allegedly admitted that Moore may have been cremated weeks earlier.
Mole missing from mother's foot
Robinson told KWTX News 10 that she immediately knew something was wrong after noticing a mole missing from her mother's foot. "I looked at her feet and I didn't see that mole that my mom has on her feet and I looked at that man and I said, Sir, this is not my mama, and he said it just like this. He said, 'I'm sorry. They must have cremated your mom a week or two ago. I'm so sorry'," she said.
The family said they have not yet received the ashes that the funeral home claims belong to Moore. "We need answers," Robinson said. "This is crazy. We don't deserve this. She don't deserve this."
Funeral home apologises
Hutchinson Funeral Home released a statement following the incident. "We are heartbroken and deeply sorry for what Ms. Moore's family has experienced. We have launched our own internal review to determine exactly what happened, and we will deal with it accordingly," the funeral home said.
Despite having no remains, the family held a celebration of life service for Kimberly on Saturday. One relative said, "I can't understand this because in the end she left everything set up for us so we didn't have to worry about her funeral money and all that. She left everything beautiful and I can't believe that this happened to her."
Family seeks answers
Kimberly's cousin, Geraldine Carr, travelled from Alabama to Detroit to support the family. "You can only grieve so much without saying goodbye to that person, her children are truly devastated. I'm devastated," she said.
Robinson also expressed concern for the family of the woman whose body was placed in her mother's casket. "Whoever this lady is, I pray that her family come forth because they need answers too," she said. The family continues to seek answers about what happened to Moore's remains.
