A couple running a furniture restoration studio in Jacksonville, Florida, were astonished to discover a hidden stash of cash and a gold coin inside an old dresser they had purchased at a thrift shop. The pair shared their incredible find on TikTok, where the video quickly went viral.
Unexpected Treasure in a Second-Hand Dresser
The video, posted by Heirloom House, shows the couple shining a torch into the back of the dresser. To their surprise, a folded bundle of cash was wedged between two pieces of wood. 'That's a good bit of money,' the man says. His wife responds, 'I think that might be a 20 on the outside.' As she uses a screwdriver to pry the notes out, she exclaims, 'Oh that's a 50!' The bundle unfolds to reveal a $100 note at its centre, prompting gasps and laughter.
The woman counts the money slowly, noting the age of the bills. The bundle contains ten $50 notes and one $100 bill, totalling $600 (approximately £445). '600 bucks baby! They're all old, man. I haven't seen 100s and 50s folded like that,' the man says. His wife adds, 'This is insane.'
Searching further, the man finds a gold coin in a plastic protective case, featuring a cartoon-style dragon on one side and symbols on the other. 'It's fake, but it's cool,' he says. 'Something like a Chinese good luck coin kind of thing I guess.'
Age of the Notes
In a follow-up video, the woman revealed that all but one of the banknotes dated between 1963 and 1969, while one dated back to 1950. The dates refer to the design series, not the exact printing year.
The TikTok clip, captioned 'I cannot believe this!! This is the first time we’ve ever found anywhere close to this much! Holy cow y’all! We are incredibly blessed!', garnered thousands of comments. Many viewers urged the couple to have the bills and coin professionally appraised. One commenter wrote: 'Bring to a coin shop. They will help you to preserve and value your bills. Probably worth more than face value.' Another added: 'Get those bills looked at, they [are] probably worth more. Depending on the year, the $50s alone are almost doubled value.' Others speculated about the original owner, with one saying, 'That’s someone’s ‘run money’. I hope they’re okay,' and another noting, 'That $600 back when it was hidden was probably like $6,000.'
